Generally, it is thought that the coupling to an environment tends to suppress the
quantum behavior of a system. However, there exist situations where the system
owes its quantum character to the presence of an environment. The simplest
example is the free Brownian particle. During the discussion of such systems, we
will find that under appropriate conditions an increase of the number of degrees of
freedom may decrease the specific heat and that decreasing temperatures can
restore classical behavior. The physical origin of these surprising phenomena will
be explained.
