Frédéric Pierre (Laboratoire de Photonique et de Nanostructures, Marcoussis, France) - Jeudi 30 janvier.

At small scale, such that quantum coherence is preserved, the flow of particles across a conductor can be decomposed into elementary modes called transport channels. A remarkable prediction of quantum mechanics is that there is a fundamental quantum limit to the maximum flow of heat through each channel. This quantum bound, the so-called quantum of thermal conductance, is predicted to be fully universal, independent not only of the material but also of the type and statistics of the particles carrying the heat (electrons, phonons, photons, anyons…). From the deep relationship between heat, entropy and information, this signals a general limit on information transfer. After a broad introduction, I will present the experimental determination of the quantum limited heat flow across an electronic channel.
