Description

These lectures give an introduction to fundamental concepts in Group Theory, with application to the study of Invariances in Physics. Some basics on the groups of Special Relativity and of rotations in 3 dimensions and on the Dirac equation are recalled during the first week ("prérentrée"). Then one introduces Lie groups and algebras and the theory of their representations. The Cartan theory of roots and weights follows. The main applications discussed in this course deal with symmetries of the Standard Model of particle physics, flavor symmetries and gauge symmetries.
