Registration

All students are required to register as soon as possible and in any cases during the registration period. The registration process allows you to validate your personal and academic information.

Students who have been awarded a scholarship by the ENS-ICFP are required to register at Ecole normale supérieure.

Students from Sorbonne Université, Université de Paris, Université Paris-Saclay and l’Institut Polytechnique de Paris (second year) who have been admitted in the Master’s program are required to register at their home university.

Other students are required to register in one of the following institutions : Ecole normale supérieure,Sorbonne Université , Université Paris Diderot, Université Paris-Sud.

Enrolment

Students will be contacted in October at which time they will finalize their course selections.

Daily life and other matters

Libraries and copying machines

Students may enroll to have access to the main library of the Physics Department and its collections. At the end of the year, the student must return all borrowed books. Failure to do so may influence the jury’s deliberation.

Language courses

Courses are offered by the ENS ("Espace des cultures et langues d’ailleurs": ECLA).
Mastery of a foreign language (especially written and spoken English if it is not your primary language) is essential today for any practicing physicist.
The ENS offers many language courses, at both a beginner’s and a more proficient level. The courses are available to all students. Two semesters of weekly classes of a living language are required: English is of course widely available, but also German, Arab, Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and more.

Self-directed work: library-based projects

Self-directed study is an invaluable part of the first year Master’s program. With a correspondingly reduced course load, there is more time to reflect---either on one’s own or in a group---and to probe more deeply. There is a wealth material available: documents from the literature, specialized monographs, collections of exercises and worked problems, as well as additional course notes. The library-based course encourages the student to proceed along these lines.

Tutorship

The department provides an individual tutor at the start of the first year of the Master’s program. The tutor should play an important guiding role for the student, but it is the latter who must take the initiative in establishing a good rapport. The tutor in principle can place the student in contact with researchers in France and abroad, and offer advice on any additional steps that the student should take that may be useful or necessary for a particular field of specialty.

Seminars for students and Departmental Seminars

Regular attendance at seminars is an important aspect in the life of an active researcher. Seminars broaden one’s professional outlook and keep the researcher from focusing too narrowly on a very specialized domain of interest. Toward this end, the Physics Department organizes a general weekly seminar. All students are strongly encouraged to attend, whatever their particular field of interest may be. A series of presentations touching on current areas of active research and related disciplines has been created especially for students.

Housing

It is always difficult to find somewhere to live in Paris so make sure it is resolved as soon as possible.

Visa and residence permit

Students from the European Union do not need to apply for a visa.
If you are not a citizen of the European Union, you have to apply for a ‘VLS-TS’ visa.
