Description
Quantum mechanics deeply modifies the classical understanding of what a measurement is. In particular, the outcome of a measurement is a random number, whose statistics can be predicted. Besides, the measurement process modifies the state of a system so that the results of two consecutive measurement can be more correlated than classically allowed.
In this course, we will tackle quantum measurement from the perspective of recent experiments exploring a vast diversity of quantum systems (cavity QED, circuit QED, optomechanics, qubits...). In a first part, we will review the most general theory of measurement. Then, we will show how the Heisenberg uncertainty principle affects measurements. In particular, the fact that physical quantities fluctuate even at zero temperature sets limits on how precise a measurement can get. We will also present ways to go beyond these limits using quantum noise squeezing.
In more details, we will address the following points.
1- Generalized measurement theory
2- Classical and quantum noise
3- Amplification
4- Evading quantum limits for detection
