Magnetic reconnection is a diffusive process whereby the topology of a magnetic field in a conducting fluid changes with time.

A two-dimensional model demonstrating this process is developed, and corresponding three-dimensional effects are considered. Analogous problems of vortex reconnection, of great importance at a fundamental level for the problem of turbulence, are discussed
