The interstellar medium provides the raw materials for the formation of new stars and planets and it also maintains a chemical archive of the products of nucleosynthesis and stellar death from previous generations of stars.

Recent investigations of small carbon molecules (for example C2 and C3) in diffuse interstellar clouds are connected to several important, unsolved problems of the physical and chemical state of interstellar matter
