The well-established Principles of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics can not describe systems far from equilibrium, which continuously exchange energy, matter or information with their surroundings.
In recent years, significant progress has been made towards a general framework for non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. The aim of this talk is to review some important results and illustrate them by examples, such as interface fluctuations in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, current statistics in low dimensional conductors and anomalous diffusion.
