The phrase "postmodern quantum mechanics" has been used by several physicists to characterize their work in quantum chaos. As a historian of physics, I will give some reflections on the meaning of this designation in both historical and contemporary terms, while aiming more broadly to characterize some salient features of work on complex systems.

How does it happen, we may wonder, that such esoteric work in physics shares prominent aspects of work called "postmodern" in a field so distant as architecture. In exploring the question, I will focus on the role of hybrid objects. A definite answer is not to be expected
