The department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at UC Santa Cruz
has a strong focus group in Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics with
Nic Brummell (specialist in dynamo theory, compressible MHD)
Pascale Garaud (double-diffusive convection, shear-induced
turbulence, stellar mixing)
Dongwook Lee ( compressible MHD, author of the FLASH code)
We are proposing a number of potential M1 and M2 internships in theoretical and
numerical aspects of these topics. Students can choose between topics
that have a more "pen-and-paper" component, or a more numerical
component, or both. Examples of topics are (but are not limited to) :
1 Shear instabilities : to use numerical experimentations to understand
the rate of transport of heat, and chemical species, in shear-induced
turbulence
2 Double-diffusive convection : to better understand the process of
layer formation, and its implications for stellar mixing.
3. Magnetic buoyancy : numerical simulations to understand how
magnetic structures
are formed and rise in compressible atmosphers
4. Dynamos : numerical simulations to understand the basic nature of the
generation of magnetic fields by fluid motion in an electrically-
conducting fluid
5. High-order numerical schemes : finite difference and finite volume
high-order accurate numerical schemes to solve numerical PDEs.
6. Anisotropic thermal conduction : directionally biased heat
conduction along magnetic field lines using an implicit scheme.
Students interested in applying should send
a CV
a transcript of their grades
a short letter describing the reasons for their interest in UCSC and
in the projects offered.
We will help with the student’s visa application, provide the student
with a monthly stipend depending on their needs, and cover their
travel to and from the US (one return trip only).
