Description

The goal of this course is to introduce string theory. We motivate the study of string theory, and demonstrate the use of two-dimensional conformal field theory. We study properties of conformal field theories, like the state-operator correspondence, operator product expansions, the symmetry algebra and the central charge. We illustrate these concepts mostly with free fields. Using these tools, we compute the spectrum of the open and closed bosonic string. We show that it includes gauge bosons as well as a spin two massless particle, the graviton. We calculate scattering amplitudes in string theory, and analyze their distinct high energy behaviour. Moreover, we argue why the quantum theory is finite. We may touch upon compactications, T-duality and D-branes, as well as a selection of even more advanced topics at the end of the course.
