Physics and future applications of meso-photonic devices.
Anthony F.J. Levi (University of Southern California, Los Angeles)

High-quality semiconductor materials and fabrication of nano-scale structures enable a new class of scaled photonic device. These devices can have interesting physical behavior. For example, laser diodes which operate using a few thousand electrons and a few hundred photons operate in a meso-photonic regime in which dynamic behavior, fluctuations and photon statistics are significantly modified from the conventional case.

In addition to the physics, design of practical devices present special challenges. This talk illustrates the present state of our research and outlines some future directions, challenges, and motivation to pursue meso-photonics.
