Neuroscience has been a topic of scientific interest in the Physics department at ENS almost since a theory group in Statistical Physics was created here in the 80’s. In this talk, I will try to illustrate the usefulnesss of Statistical Physics approaches for Neuroscience, on two enduring questions that we have worked on, with several collaborators and students. The first is the basis of neural rhythms which have been recorded in humans and animals since the invention of the electroencephalogram. The second is the relation between learning and strengths of synapses, and the proper tuning of the latter. The talk will hopefully also illustrate that ENS offers a privileged environment for such endeavors that require tight interdisplinary collaboration.
