Breaking waves at the water surface is a striking example of turbulent mixing across a fluid interface. The impact of the jet generates turbulence, entrains air into the water and ejects droplets into the air. A fundamental understanding of the general multi-scale properties of the resulting multiphase turbulent flow is necessary to develop more accurate gas transfer or spray generation parameterizations.
We propose internship projects within the context of turbulence at the ocean-atmosphere interface, combining laboratory and numerical simulations, on bubbles and drops break-up within a turbulent flow, wave breaking in the presence of wind, interaction between the turbulent atmospheric boundary layer, wind wave generation, surface drift generation by wind waves and breaking waves and the formation of Langmuir turbulence.
