This is the follow-up couse to the quantum field theory class of the first semester. Topics we will cover include non-abelian gauge symmetry, spontaneous symmetry breaking, and the Higgs mechanism, all needed to understand the inner workings of the Standard Model, which we shall discuss in some detail.
There will be no dedicated exercise sessions. You will however be given the chance to familiarize yourself with and manipulate various aspects of the QFT formalism in class.
The evaluation will be based on a 10 page final report and a 15 to 30 minute oral exam. I will provide a list of possible topics for the report in due time, but you will also be welcome to propose a topic (which I will need to validate). The oral exam, which will not be shorter than 15 minutes and not exceed 30 minutes, will be both on your report and on the material presented in class.
Bibliography
The organization of the course will roughly follow
Matthew Schwartz, Quantum Field Theory and the Standard Model, Cambridge University Press (2014)
I will also draw inspiration from
Steven Weinberg, The Quantum Theory of Fields (Volume II), Cambridge University Press (1996)
and
Tom Banks, Modern Quantum Field Theory, Cambridge University Press (2008)
