Personal work plays an essential role in the undergraduate studies at ENS. The reduced class time allows the students to think and go deeper in their learning using external documents, books and problem books, besides their lecture notes.
The library-based projects follow this line. At the end of a personal work under the supervision of one senior researcher of the ENS Physics Department, the student presents his results during an oral presentation. The quality of both the presentation and the work performed is taken into account for the evaluation of this course. The project can be a preparatory step for the research internship of the second semester. For instance, a specific aspect of the internship defined at the beginning of the year can indeed lead to a preliminary bibliographical work in agreement with the supervisor of the internship and the local supervisor of the projects.
One main goal of this course is to learn how to use the bibliographical tools in order to identify and exploit a small number of articles dealing with a given subject of modern physics. This research process is a complement to the theoretical formation of the students that teaches also how to present the results in a synthetic and pedagogical way.
